Panasonic DMC-FX01 Review

Review Summary
Reader Score: 8.39 (out of 10)
"The DMC-FX01 offers the same rugged but elegant build as previous cameras in the series. Metal clad front and back, the only plastic on the exterior are the cover door for the battery and memory card and the cover door for the external connection. However, even these are silvered and blend perfectly with the metallic surfaces of the FX01. Moreover, depending on where the camera is purchased, it can also be had in black, pink, and white.

While we would have liked to have seen more options when it comes to compression, and a lesser susceptibility to noise, in some respects the DMC-FX01 breaks new ground while carrying on with some of the best features we have come to expect from Panasonic cameras. Overall, when compared to previous models, the FX01 brings new flexibility and abilities that should make it as popular as its predecessors have been."

Review: "The Panasonic Lumix FX-01 has a lot going for it. The wide angle zoom is unique in a camera of this size, the LCD screen is fantastic quality,as is the general fit and finish of the camera. The noise levels are the most disappointing aspect of this camera, at ISO80 there is already a noticeable level of noise present and by ISO 400 the image quality has deteriorated further.

Although the noise levels could be a major problem for some, it wasn't enough to put me off this camera, the solid build and image quality in good light are enough to warrant overlooking this flaw."

Review: "The Panasonic DMC-FX01 is the smallest digital camera in the world with a 28mm wide-angle digital zoom lens. The FX01 offers a 28-102mm, 3.6x zoom lens in a stylish and ultra-compact body. The Panasonic FX01 also features a 6 megapixel sensor, 2.5 inch LCD screen, and as with all Panasonic cameras, the company's MEGA O.I.S optical image stabilization system for shake-free photos.

The Panasonic Lumix DMC-FX01 dealt very well with chromatic aberrations, with limited purple fringing effects appearing only in high contrast situations. Macro performance is average, allowing you to focus as close as 5 cms away from the subject. The built-in flash worked well indoors, with no red-eye and slight under-exposure."

Preview: "At PMA, Panasonic announced the release of their new Lumix DMC-FX01, which looks to add a new dimension to the point-and-shoot market with a 28-102mm wide angle zoom lens for both still and video capture that should directly compete with the recently released Kodak EasyShare V570. Within this camera is Panasonic’s signature MEGA optical image stabilization along with 3.6x optical zoom and a 6 MP CCD.

In terms of value the Panasonic Lumix DMC-FX01 is a strong contender, due to the 28-102mm wide angle zoom lens which is capable of recording true 16:9 in both still and video recording modes with optical image stabilization for under $350. The camera has a handful of preset shooting modes, a couple of manual control options, minimal image editing in playback mode. Its 2.5-inch LCD with 207K resolution comes in four body colors for a little theoretical personalization, and the small frame and clean external and internal design should allow easy navigation and comfortable portage. But if full manual control is wanted within this price range, it may make sense to look at other alternatives."
